Corrupt Illinois Politicians vs. the Sicilian Mafia

The Chicago Tribune continues to follow the admissions scandal at the University of Illinois. Columnist John Kass wrote a piece and in the comments section was this gem:
“Voice of reason

John, I have read your articles comparing the corrupt “pols” to the Outfit. I googled Mafia and found an interesting article that printed the Mafia’s 10 Commandments.
“In November 2007 Sicilian police reported to have found a list of “Ten Commandments” in the hideout of mafia boss Salvatore Lo Piccolo. They are thought to be guidelines on how to be a good, respectful and honorable mafioso.
1. No one can present himself directly to another of our friends. There must be a third person to do it.
2. Never look at the wives of friends.
3. Never be seen with cops.
4. Don’t go to pubs and clubs.
5. Always being available for Cosa Nostra is a duty – even if your wife is about to give birth.
6. Appointments must absolutely be respected.
7. Wives must be treated with respect.
8. When asked for any information, the answer must be the truth/
9. Money cannot be appropriated if it belongs to others or to other families.
10. People who can’t be part of Cosa Nostra: anyone who has a close relative in the police, anyone with a two-timing relative in the family, anyone who behaves badly and doesn’t hold to moral values.
After reading this I don’t believe the “pols” have enough character to be in the Mafia.”

After the first article in the series came out, I was reading the CapFax blog and a Question of the Day was whether pols’ phoning about admissions was “clout” or just “constituent services.” I felt really out of sync with the crowd over there. A lot of people thought the Trib was really reaching or overreacting. There’s a lot of animosity toward the Trib itself, no doubt for good reason but it made people want to discount the fact that the paper had actually expended some resources into investigating this potential abuse of the system (not to mention sparking an official investigation as well). We should be so lucky to have local media put a few bucks into investigative series every once in awhile. It would be a real public service.

Many of the bloggers posting comments on the Trib started out thinking it was a constituent service but as more information continued to roll out, the mood changed toward more disgust.
The local media cannot find the letter to the editor I sent them, the delivery person does not always find my sidewalk, and the Chronicle dumped reporters capable of investigation (especially Benji). Do not hold your breath for some good stuff out of the local media. :-(

YINN,
Not sure where to post this but we are getting all caught up in the FF contracts and layoffs and other things are going to heck.
DeKalb School District could have a serious problem in Cortland with the new grade school. Cortland can’t handle the waste headed towards the new Shaefer system that was Cortland’s answer to their sewage problem.
Also….”I truly believe that many of the problems we are currently seeing in DeKalb is because our local government officials and paid staff cannot think outside the box. If they could, revenue may actually be on the upswing or steady instead of decreasing. Our city officials have completely under utilized TIF and the monies that TIF has to do good amongst many in this community. Upstarting new businesses, job retraining, and even putting many dollars into many local stores and local contractors doing home and business repairs. Genoa is showing the way…. http://www.dekalbcounty-il.com/?p=916 Another story that the Chronicle is missing.”
There is much more that DeKalb can be doing downtown, I guess Genoa has really figured it out and did it first. Maybe DeKalb will catch on and follow the lead.
