I didn’t have a chance to post about tonight’s meeting agenda, but there’s a discussion started at the Facebook page for the Lunatic Fringe of DeKalb, IL. J.P. Salovesh has pulled out for comment two items from the Committee of the Whole agenda that are of particular interest.

Yesterday I received a letter from the Office of the Attorney General regarding its ruling on the FOIA request to release the names of council members who take the City of DeKalb’s health insurance. Click on any page of the letter to see a larger image.

Garden Blog: Deck Photos

I refinished the deck this summer. The job took weeks because, back in June, there was a stretch where it rained every other day, remember? Even when it didn’t, I had to wait until mid-afternoon for shade under which to finish the staining and varnishing. We’re happy with the results, though, and the plants are ecstatic. Time to Look at Bell

Home to 37,000 people, Bell, California is one of the least prosperous suburbs of Los Angeles at a per capita income of about $24,000, yet its residents pay the second-highest property tax rate in Los Angeles County — even higher than that of Beverly Hills.

The taxes have gone to pay some of the highest public sector compensation in the nation, including $787,000 to its city manager and up to $100,000 each for city council members. In comparison, the salary of the CEO of Los Angeles County is $338,000. Bell officials have boasted of balanced budgets but records show compensation for its management employees has continued to rise even in the face of layoffs and other cuts to public safety and community services programs. According to the Daily Chronicle, last night the DeKalb County’s Finance Committee voted to send an FY2011 budget proposal to the full county board that contains cuts to the health department and sheriff’s office — as well as a property tax hike of about 2.4% for the average homeowner.

What’s the deal?

[Deputy County Administrator Gary] Hanson said the 2011 budget will be larger because of the courthouse expansion and installation of a county-wide, fiber-optic network.

“Overall the county budget will be up and it’s those two projects that will drive it,” Hanson said.

Beyond the bass-ackwardness of the budget priorities, what happened to the promises that the courthouse project would not raise our taxes?
