Corn Fest Gives Back
Author: yinnSep 17
GuideStar is great for researching charities and, if they pass muster, donating to them on-site. It’s a gathering place for data on other nonprofit organizations, too — apparently for any that file IRS Form 990, which is marked “Open to Public Inspection.”
One I looked over recently is DeKalb Corn Fest, Inc., a group that continually gets a bad rap. There are several reasons for this — totally my personal opinion, based on observation — starting with the mistaken but widespread notion that Corn Fest is a city committee spending taxpayers’ money. Tied to that is the expense of participating as a vendor. Then there’s the perception of a takeover by the unpopular ReNew DeKalb, as well as an old buildup of resentment over one or two former members who reputedly had what I call “bulldozer” personalities.
At any rate, if you’ve ever wondered where the money goes, you can register with GuideStar and read three years’ worth of DCF 990s. Check out the administrative expenses and the grants made to local charitable organizations, which is part of its mission. It may change how you think about the Corn Fest group.
Where’s Wogen?
Author: yinnSep 15
Last night at the Council meeting I asked 3rd Ward Alderman Victor Wogen to state for the record where he is living now. This seems fair; after all, I had to submit my address to speak at the meeting. Astoundingly, instead of answering he looked to the attorney for help, and she said he didn’t have to answer.

This is information freely given to all who seek it, except in the case of Third Ward Alderman Victor Wogen. He gets to live anywhere he wants, residency requirements be damned and how dare we ask! Thanks, Council. Lest we fool ourselves into thinking we have representation, you faithfully drag us back to the reality that you are out for none but yourselves. Read the rest of this entry
High School Construction Contracts
Author: yinnSep 11
Here is the list of contracts awarded for the construction of the new DeKalb High School. School Board President Mike Verbic sent it to me and a few others in late July, but I didn’t put it up then because I expected it to show up on the revamped District 428 website. Well, either they haven’t posted it there yet, or I am unable to find it. So here ’tis.
While we’re at it, let me show you a nifty tool for looking up ownership of companies. Read the rest of this entry
Things Could Be WORSE!
Author: Kay SheltonSep 9
OK, we will soon have a Sidewalk from Nowhere to Nowhere, a half-million dollar skating rink that almost no one uses that is closed more than it is open, a Taj Mahal high school built upon overestimated new EAV that may never, ever come into fruition but will eventually kill us all with property taxes, aldermen who are M.I.A. who have yet to be fined properly for their absences (at least they cannot do any voting damage when they are not there!), and one who allegedly does not live in the ward anymore. But, hey, things could be worse!! Read the rest of this entry
DAWC Needs Diggers
Author: yinnSep 8
The DeKalb Area Women’s Center is trying to get its water garden put in. Help is sought for two days this week, Thursday and Saturday. If you can dig, show up with a shovel anytime between 9-3 either day. One can also help by donating native plants for the garden, or providing refreshments for the volunteers. Just the Facts: Obama’s Speech in District 428
Author: yinnSep 7
I received two e-mails very early this morning that Dr. Evil Briscoe, Superintendent of Schools for District 428, has ordered all the school principals not to show President Obama’s speech to schoolchildren tomorrow morning.
However, according to recorded school auto-calls placed to district families a bit after 10 a.m., the speech will be shown throughout the district but any children wishing to opt out of watching the speech may do so without penalty. Was a decision reversed in the face of public displeasure, or is this a correction to a rumor run wild? You decide. I have to go check the President’s Labor Day remarks for socialistic propaganda inspiration. [/snark]
Guess Who?
Author: Kay SheltonSep 3
Guess who said the following:
“We are running full steam ahead.”
“They [voters/taxpayers] just don’t understand.”
“I’ve done an A+.”
“We haven’t raised property taxes in 16 years.” Read the rest of this entry

P.E.T. Does It. Why Won’t ReNew?
Author: yinnSep 3
Last week I submitted a FOIA request to the City of DeKalb to review meeting minutes from the Preservation of the Egyptian Theater (P.E.T.) organization. Today I stopped by the Municipal Building to pick up two years’ worth, which translated to minutes of 17 meetings. Such accessibility is made possible by a provision of P.E.T.’s contract with the City of DeKalb (p. 242):
F. SUBMISSION OF ANNUAL BUDGET, AUDITOR’S REPORT & MEETING MINUTES: P.E.T. shall submit a copy of their most recent annual budget, Auditor’s Report, and copies of any board meeting minutes of any meeting where the receipt or use of City funding is discussed or acted upon, within thirty days of the approval of such documents.
P.E.T. hereby certifies it shall comply with the Open Meetings Act when the receipt or use of City funding is discussed or acted upon.
You may recall that I also submitted a FOIA request for ReNew DeKalb meeting minutes from the past two years because ReNew has the same clause in its contract with the City, and when doesn’t ReNew talk about use of City money? –but, even after an appeal, they are not forthcoming.
Some follow the rules while others flout them.
Thanks, P.E.T., for choosing the former.
