Privatization & Public Safety

“I can tell you right now how to shave $10 million off the city budget,” a DeKalb business person told me recently.

How?

“Privatize everything.”

It’s an extreme view redolent of anti-union sentiment and we will not be hearing pronouncements from city hall about contracting out for basic services anytime soon, I’m sure.

However, that doesn’t mean privatization isn’t going to happen in DeKalb. Due to ongoing budget woes, some version of it may stumble in through the back door. Read the rest of this entry

Weekend Open Thread

Votes on the high school annexation and liquor code changes are coming up at City Council on Monday. Chronicle says the city and the school district are simpatico, but what happened with the Shodeen objections raised at the last meeting? And who is paying for the road improvements? Has that been answered yet?

Rental Housing Nuisance Act

From a comment made yesterday:

I had a nightmare that the rental inspection fee made a come back in the summer of 2009, after most of the NIU students left.

I don’t know what the city might be cooking up, but a new rental inspection law, HB3857, is making its way through the Illinois General Assembly. Read the rest of this entry

New Revenue Source

Restaurant and bar owners who initially embraced the mayor-elect’s idea to allow al fresco wining and dining are reportedly a tad less enthusiastic now it’s become clear the city intends to charge rent for sidewalk space.
